As we start this journey I felt I needed to clarify some things about fasting. I don’t want you to think that by just stopping eating or watching TV that will turn things around for you spiritually. Our journey this lent is about drawing close to God. It is about waiting on the Lord for direction and power from the Holy Spirit. Our purpose is to humble ourselves before God and turn from our ways. This is all about being changed by the word of God. You see fasting for the sake of fasting does not change your heart if you continue to do things you are not supposed to do. It is like going to church and acting liking a Christian for an hour, then going to work and acting like the world, that is hypocritical. The same goes with fasting. I don’t want this to be so much about fasting but our obeying the word of God and listening to the Spirits leading. Seek first the kingdom of God and then see what you are hungry for. We need to be hungry for the word of God. This also means we need to be praying for the ability to hear once again. Amos 8:11 “The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “when I will send a famine through the land— not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.” Paul says in Romans 10 “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” If we can’t hear; how can we have faith? So during this time pray for ears that hear. I am not going to post the whole chapter but read Isaiah 58 and let the word of God speak to you.
