Deuteronomy 6 is a powerful passage for us to abide by. Moses has just given the Ten Commandments to the people. God had told him to teach the people to observe them in the land he was giving them. They were to obey these commandments so that you, your children and their children may fear the Lord your God as long as you live, and not only live but you would enjoy long life. He then stresses that we need to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”
In our day the Ten Commandments have become two, which are known as the great commandment, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Jesus combined them all together. So now we are to obey them just as Moses told the people to obey. If we want to stay in this land God is giving us we must be followers of the word of God. The missing ingredient in most people is the fear of God. Today there is not much fear in God. Proverbs 1:7 states, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:29 “they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD.” We must follow this command with our whole life. We need to do the same and impress, talk, tie and write them so that we do not forget the amazing things God will do for us in the land He is giving us for all time. Deuteronomy 6:24 “The Lord commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today. 25 And if we are careful to obey all this law before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.” God gave Israel a land that was flourishing already. All He asked was for them to obey Him with all they had. What does God have in store for us as we seek him wholeheartedly? 1 Corinthians 2:9 “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”— the things God has prepared for those who love him.” (This verse came from Isaiah 64 where it says, “who acts on behalf of those who wait for him”)
